NCPreK
NCPre-K is North Carolina's state-funded pre-kindergarten program. Its purpose is to provide an academic pre-kindergarten experience during the year prior to children entering kindergarten. The program primarily serves at-risk children from low-income families and those who have been identified to have developmental and/or physical challenges.
NCPre-K classrooms are located in public schools, licensed child care centers, and Head Start centers. All classrooms provide a school year program that meets high academic standards including birth-kindergarten licensed teachers and a state-approved curriculum that supports early literacy and learning.
There is no charge for a 6-1/2 hour day. Additional hours are available at most child care sites. Some sites provide transportation and other services.
Who is eligible?
NCPre-K serves children during the year before they enter kindergarten. Children who will be four years old on or before August 31, 2011 are eligible to enroll for the 2011-2012 school year. Priority is given to families whose income is less than the state median income or whose child has an IEP (Individual Education Plan).
